TRIBUTES have been paid to dad-of-two Dean Chambers who died following a Downham 'hit and run' which took place just metres from his home.

Mr Chambers, who police say was 32-years-old, was knocked down by a van in Bromley Road at the junction with Winlaton Road on Saturday (January 4) at around 6.30pm.

When ambulance crews arrived, Mr Chambers was in cardiac arrest and had a head injury. Despite being rushed to King's College Hospital, he was pronounced dead soon afterwards.

The driver, a 35-year-old from Bromley, did not stop at the scene but contacted police later that evening. He was later arrested for causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Four teenage girls comforted Mr Chambers and called for an ambulance, but said other passers-by walked past and did nothing.

Charley Robins, 16, from Kenley, said: "My friend spotted his trainers on the kerb but we couldn't really see because it was dark.

"As we got closer we noticed he was a man but he looked lifeless. There was a massive puddle of blood on the floor."

She added: "Lots of people were walking past him like nothing had happened."

The teenager went on: "I phoned an ambulance. My friend was talking to him. She was just making silly conversation to see if she could wake him up.

"It did wake him up a bit and he did try to move. We could see that he was breathing."

Charley said she and her friends stayed with Mr Chambers until paramedics and the victim's partner arrived at the scene.

Witnesses said that two men stayed with Mr Chambers and helped a paramedic resuscitate him before he was taken to hospital.

Tributes have been flooding in for the former Sedgehill School pupil, who worked as a garage DJ called Mr DC for radio station Feeling LDN.

In a statement on their website, Feeling LDN said: "We are very saddened with the news that we have lost a very special friend over this last weekend.

"Mr DC (Dean Chambers) who has been playing on Feeling LDN for two years sadly passed away after a accident near his home.

Flowers and tributes have been left at the scene of the crash which took place opposite a BP garage and around 100 metres from Mr Chambers' flat in Bromley Road.

One note read: β€œDean, a great father and partner to Nina and kids. RIP you will never be forgotten.”

While another said: β€œRIP Dean. Rave with them angels. Love Kellie.”

Manager of the garage on Bromley Road, Vithi Ananthan, says staff also called London Ambulance Service when Mr Chambers, who was a regular customer, was hit as he crossed the road.

He said: β€œHe crossed from that side of the road and was hit by the car.

β€œThey are regular customers. He is very polite.”

She said:"I saw a guy lying by the kerb."

She added: β€œIt is just very busy this road, you have got to be careful.”
