CHRISTMAS is long gone, the weather is truly terrible and it's back to the grind for most of us, so it's not surprising that today (Jan 6) has come to be known as Blue Monday - supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

It's also now known as Divorce Monday by legal professionals. Many a marriage crumbles over the holiday period and today is apparently the busiest day for divorce proceedings to start.

Recruiters are also getting in on the action, dubbing the day Massive Monday due to the huge surge in job applications thanks to people looking for a fresh start in the New Year.

But I'm here to tell you it's a myth, completely debunked by smart people - one particular day in the year cannot be the "most depressing" for all!

And if you don't believe me, read News Shopper's top five reasons to be cheerful this fine Monday:

1.The cold weather means you can wrap up warm and no-one can tell you put on a gazillion pounds over Christmas.

2. There are only 352 days till Christmas - so you can start your present shopping in the January sales. Advent calendars are so cheap right now, you just can't not buy them.

3. At least your telly's still working, unlike these poor Thamesmead residents over Christmas.

4.Valentine's Day is almost here again - and if you're single (after the divorce you filed for in January has come through) it just doesn't get more depressing than a day devoted to happy couples.

5. Relax, it's only January 6! If today is the glummest day of the year, smile because it can only get better.
