A club DJ, a former crime agency chief and the philanthropic parents of a murdered teenager were among those recognised by the Queen in this year’s New Year's Honours List.

Radio 1 presenter Pete Tong, from Gravesend, who is also an ambassador for local charity EllenorLions Hospices, earned an MBE for his services to music and broadcasting.

Director of Fundraising at EllenorLions Rachel Holweger said: "We congratulate him on his MBE and look forward to working with him during 2014 to highlight the vital care EllenorLions Hospices provides to the community.

"As a charity which is reliant on fundraising, it is wonderful for us to have such a high profile celebrity helping us to increase awareness and donations."

Barry and Margaret Mizen, whose 16-year-old son Jimmy was murdered in the Three Cooks bakery in Burnt Ash Hill, Lee, in May 2008, received MBEs for services to young people.

The couple set up the Jimmy Mizen Foundation to help young people play a positive role in their communities.

Trevor Pearce, from Gravesend, the former director general of the Serious and Organised Crime Agency, was awarded a CBE for his services to law enforcement.

Barbara Bradley, from Dartford, received a British Empire Medal for her services to the community and charity work in Horton Kirby.

Two senior members of staff at the Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust also received honours for their dedication and hard work.

The foundation trust’s chief executive Stephen Firn received an OBE for services to health services, particularly mental health.

Clinical director in Forensic and Prison services Dr Jackie Craissati recieved an MBE for services to mental health.

Chair of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust Dave Mellish said: "I am very happy for both Stephen and Jackie and it is pleasing to see our mental and community health services being recognised in this way."

The leader of Kent County Council, Councillor Paul Carter, was also honoured with a CBE.

He told News Shopper: "I’m absolutely delighted to have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honours List this year. It reflects on all the hard work put in by everybody at KCC over many years helping to improve the lives of all our residents in Kent at all ages and stages of life.

"I would also like to offer my personal congratulations to all those honoured in Kent for their hard work, dedication and contribution."

In total, 1,195 people have received an award, with 74 per cent of them for outstanding work in their communities.
