HAVING grazed at the Royal Oak a few times, I have always been curious as to how the Rose and Crown opposite compares.
The Oak is a decent pub - though more of a restaurant - so it crossed my mind that the Rose and Crown could have been the weak link in a generally strong offering of pubs in Green Street Green.
Not a chance.
From the outside it is a tidy-looking pub, but it is when you step in that the dim-orange glow and warmth from the fires at either end enchant you.
Let’s imagine you had an awkward fumble at the Christmas party, the Rose and Crown would make a perfect place for that meeting where you’re not sure if it will be a first date or a clear-the-air talk where the two of you agree to never mention it again.
It’s spacious interior has bags of varied seating, from benches by the window which you can stare out of wistfully, to something more formal in the dining area or more, er, cosy on the relaxed settees by the fire.
There is a buzz of chitter chatter which makes the place comfortable and makes you feel like not everyone will be eavesdropping while unobtrusive music at an unobtrusive volume makes it possible to chat at the same time as masking awkward silences.
The other punters are normal and contented, the decor is handsome with fetching - rather than tacky - Christmas decorations, so with any luck she/he will be impressed rather than depressed.
Options at the bar are numerous, though clearly at this time of year you should opt for a Christmas Ale or Mulled Wine. If you’re after a coffee you can captialise on a deal of two mince pies for £1.
If you are hungry then there’s a tempting menu, but it don’t come cheap so you best make sure it’s a date rather than a let-down before you commit.
