PARENTS in Greenwich are being urged to sign up for healthy free school meals for their children.

Families could save between £270 and £340 per year for each child aged four to 16 years if they are claiming certain state benefits.

The call comes as part of Greenwich Council-backed campaign Kids Eat Free for parents on benefits including income support, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, child tax credit and income-related employment and support allowance.

It comes after celebrity chef Jamie Oliver helped pioneer a national drive towards healthier meals while working with schools in the borough.

Greenwich Council cabinet member for children’s services Councillor Jackie Smith said: “We encourage everyone to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and the fresh and nutritious food provided in our schools each day makes an important contribution to this.

“All parents should consider the benefits of opting for school meals, whether or not they are eligible for a free one.”
