8:37am Friday 6th December 2013 in News
THE mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence has paid tribute to Nelson Mandela, who died yesterday.
Taking to Twitter to pay her respects, Baroness Doreen Lawrence tweeted: "Mandela a man of justice and peace. Rest in peace."
Twenty years ago Mr Mandela shone a light on Britain’s own racial problems when he met the baroness and her husband in May 1993.
Mr Mandela, who had addressed both Houses of Parliament the night before the meeting, said: "We are deeply touched by the brutality of this murder, even though it is commonplace in our country. It seems black lives are cheap.
"The evil of racism is taking away innocent lives.
“The problems of racism and fascism is threatening the whole world."
Mr Mandela's death aged 95 at his home in South Africa has sparked a wave of emotional tributes from people across the world.
