GREENWICH Council is planning a £7.6m new sports centre in a Kidbrooke park.

The proposals for Sutcliffe Park, still at an early stage, are due to be discussed at a cabinet meeting next Wednesday (December 11).

They will see the current outdoor facilities upgraded, with a new multi-sports venue for indoor athletics, cricket, boxing, weightlifting and fencing, along with a community gym.

The venue, at the corner of Kidbrooke Park Road and Eltham Road, would cover around 3,000sqm next to the current running track which is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited and used by the Cambridge Harriers Athletics Club.

Forty parking spaces are set to be included in the development.

Council documents reveal that part of the reason for the development is so Greenwich can provide a training venue for the World Athletics Championships in 2017.

It is also intended to provide opportunities for taking part in paralympic sports.
