ASPIRING cyclists from across Bromley challenged a former Tour de France champion in Orpington at the weekend.
Oscar Pereiro, who won the Tour de France in 2006, paid a visit to Cycles UK in Orpington High Street on Saturday (November 30) to mark the store's official opening.
Visitors compared their cycling times to the Spaniard's over one kilometre, after he recorded his score on a turbo trainer.
Assistant manager Alex Barrington-Clark, 20, said: "It was a chance for people to come down if they needed to talk about products.
"Then we had a leader board for the one kilometre time trial and people could challenge Oscar.
"It was a really good day, everyone had a little go. Around 500 people came down.
"We gave away water bottles, DVDs, leg warmers and clothing. There was food and drink available.
"We got loads of feedback, people saying it was really good."
