DIGGING up pieces of history was the lesson of the day for excited children when a metal detecting club visited their school.

West Kent Detector Club (WKDC) buried 50 Victorian coins in the grounds of Brown’s School, Hawstead Lane, Chelsfield, and as well as finding around 30 of the coins the children found current day money and a ring.

Their time on the field came after learning a bit about metal detecting and how to use the equipment.

WKDC member Pierre Davis, whose daughter attends the school, says the teachers asked if the club would come to the school after seeing an advert on his van.

He said: “They loved it.

“We inspired a whole generation of metal detectors and they are interested in the history.

“They were excited when they were digging it up and wondering what they were going to find.”
