AN EMPTY Hither Green shop has opened its doors so volunteers can sell Christmas trees in a merry move to "bring the community together".
Festive firs will be sold from a depot space in Hither Green Lane with funds plugged straight back into the community.
There will be around 30 trees on sale in the shop every weekend during December after local builder business Barrett Bros teamed with Hither Green Community Association (HGCA) to offer the space.
HGCA chairwoman Josie Foster said: "It very much brings the community together.
"We did it last year as a trial run and it was very successful.
"They are beautiful, thick trees that don’t drop. They are fabulous."
The grandmother-of-five, who lives in Ardgowan Road, says the cash drummed up will go into improving the community garden in Springbank Road.
The 66-year-old, who also runs a furnishings business, said: "It is the main gateway of Hither Green.
"We are investing in getting that to look a lot better."
Chris Barrett, of Barrett Bros (Electrical) Ltd, added: “As the area’s trusted local builder Barrett Bros wanted to help out.
"We’re a family business and understand the importance of the local community. It’s great to see the area improving as a result of the Christmas tree project”.
The Christmas trees will be sold at 198 Hither Green Lane every Saturday and Sunday in December from 10am to 4pm.
