LEWISHAM and Greenwich remembered fallen soldiers with a series of services and wreath-laying ceremonies to mark Remembrance Day.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock laid the first wreath at the war memorial on Lewisham High Street on Sunday (November 10) where a marching band played from the 1475 Squadron ATC.

While a smaller memorial service in Upper Brockley Road was led by St John’s Church vicar Reverend Heston Groenewald with hymns and a two-minute silence observed.

War veterans remembered their fallen comrades at a parade and wreath-laying ceremony at Eltham War Memorial organised by Eltham and Well Hall’s branch of the Royal British Legion on Sunday.

And services also took place in Charlton, Blackheath, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, and Woolwich over the weekend with councillors observing a two-minute silence at Woolwich Town Hall today (November 11).

Mayor of Greenwich Councillor Angela Cornforth said: “It’s very important that we take the time to reflect and remember all those who gave their lives in the causes of peace and freedom, as well as to recall the sacrifices made by civilians on the home-front during wartime.”
