THE ex-boyfriend of a Belvedere woman who hid under her bed and attacked her with a hammer has been jailed for more than eight years.

Salim Ormanli, aged 23, was found guilty of GBH with intent to endanger life at Woolwich Crown Court and sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison on October 3.

Ormanli attacked his 29-year-old former partner with a hammer, fracturing her skull, after she ended their four-month relationship.

He broke into the woman's home on July 2 this year and waited for her under her bed.

When she returned home, he confronted her and hit her on the back of the head three times before making his escape.

The victim was taken to a hospital in south London with potentially life-threatening injuries, but has since made a full recovery.

Officers tracked down Ormanli, from Enfield, and arrested him with the assistance of a firearms unit on July 3.

When interviewed by detectives, Ormanli claimed he was acting in self defence but was convicted on September 24.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Dan Cossins, of Bexley CID, said: "This was an extremely violent attack by Ormanli on his ex-partner, which could easily have resulted in tragedy. As it was, she received fractures to the skull and finger, but it could have been far worse.

"The attack was motivated by jealousy and he went to the victim’s address to cause her serious harm. His sentence will see him behind bars now for several years."

He added: "I would appeal to anyone that is the victim of domestic abuse, to contact police. We are here to help and support you and we can and will take action to deal with those responsible."
