DARTFORD residents can get screened for a disease which kills one person every five hours in the UK.

Organisers are hoping to raise awareness of mouth cancer which more than 6,500 people are diagnosed with a year.

Early diagnosis saves lives, improving survival chances from just half of cases to more than 90 per cent.

Warning signs include ulcers which do not heal within three weeks, red and white patches or unusual changes in the mouth.

British Dental Health Foundation chief executive Dr Nigel Carter said: "Three-quarters of cases are linked to tobacco and alcohol so it is important smokers are encouraged to quit and alcohol is consumed in moderation.

"The human papillomavirus (HPV), transmitted via oral sex, and poor diets are also linked to mouth cancer.

"Worryingly the disease is also now affecting a younger group of people and many more who display none of the traditional risk factors."

The screenings are available in Dartford Road Dental Centre until the end of November every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between 10.30am and 3.30pm.
