LEWISHAM residents can buy parking permits face-to-face again after a move online was criticised for its impact on vulnerable people.

It comes after News Shopper highlighted that elderly people were being left lonely and trapped in their homes following Lewisham Council’s cash-saving move in August.

The council has reviewed the shift online which was criticised by the Lib Dems for being rolled out without consultation and included an expensive 0845 help line.

Deputy leader of Lewisham Lib Dems, who moved a motion against the changes in September, Councillor Julia Fletcher, said: "It is fantastic to see that the council has listened to the residents and made the changes we originally suggested a month ago.

"These changes will mean that vulnerable residents do not face financial exclusion."

Cash payments had been available at the Parking Shop until July when it was closed as part of a package of measures to save up to £500,000 per year.

Residents can now buy parking permits at Lewisham Library and an alternative cheaper 0207 help line number has been introduced.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: "I have always been clear that we have to take some very difficult decisions as a result of Government budget cuts.

"But it is also very important that we listen to residents and especially those who need extra help and support.

"I have listened closely to what residents and council have said and fully appreciate that the changes made this summer have disproportionately affected disabled and older residents who are more reliant on support provided by carers and other visitors."

He added: "I have therefore decided that from 1 November, visitors parking permits will once again be available to buy in cash. Lewisham Library is open 7 days a week and is a convenient central location so that makes it a good choice from which to carry out business."

Parking permits can be applied for online, by calling 020 8787 5397 or at Lewisham Library, in Lewisham High Street. For more information visit lewisham.gov.uk/parking
