UP TO 100,000 people attended the Blackheath fireworks display this year - continuing the success of one of the biggest bonfire nights in London.
The event is organised annually by Lewisham Council, which now uses donations to make up the shortfall left after Greenwich Council ended its own funding contribution.
Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: "Blackheath Fireworks was once again a show stopping event which attracted between 80,000 to 100,000 people this year.
"For the first time ever, the fireworks were started by our prize draw winner, Douglas Parrant, who did a great job in helping to light up the sky over Blackheath.
"We will continue to look at ways to increase fundraising and are hopeful that we will find a way to keep this very important free event going.
"I’d like to thank everyone who made a donation, including our main sponsors L&Q and Glendale as well as the Blackheath Society, The Clarendon Hotel, Sun-Ya, John Payne and The Everest Inn.”
- After the display, a fire at a hot food van left two people needing hospital treatment.
