A LECTURER has described how he rushed to a young driver’s aid after her car smashed through his living room window in Darenth yesterday (Oct 31).

Nicholas Pronger, 46, watched as the vehicle crashed through his house and “glass shredded everything” at around 12.20pm, metres from where his kids had been playing minutes before.

The driver, a young woman in her 20s, was cut free from the car by firefighters in a 90-minute operation and rushed to Medway Maritime Hospital as a priority by ambulance.

The father-of-three said: “It was very lucky no one was hurt. It could have been terrible. What happened was bad but my kids are alright.

“They were frightened – they’re aged three, eight and 12 – as they’d been in the lounge only 10 minutes.

“I was in the other room, on the computer, and I just saw this car come into the house and I heard a huge bang.

“As the car went through the window, the glass came out and shredded everything. It was frightening.

“There was glass all around me. You still can’t walk around inside because there it’s all over the floor.”

He added: “I instantly ran around and called the ambulance, fire and police, they all came very quickly. I checked my kids were ok.”

The Birkbeck University lecturer also ran out to check on the driver.

He said: “The woman in the car was conscious but in shock. I was talking to her, the ambulance people on the phone were telling me what questions to ask. Then they came and cut her out and took half the car off.

“The police told me to take the kids out the house until it could be confirmed it was structurally ok so I just had to put them in the car for 45 minutes.

“The main thing I’m worried about it is happening again – it’s something we’ve been aware of for a while. We’ve had cars go onto the grassy verges before.

“It’s a dangerous road - for us, for drivers and pedestrians. I’m going to contact the council to see what they can do to stop it happening again. There are no speed cameras and although it happened in the day, there should be street lights.

“There have to be bollards or some kind of protection. I’m considering putting a concrete fence up.”
