Woolwich and Greenwich foot tunnel work finally resumes
WORK on the long-delayed Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels project has finally resumed.
Following a string of errors which culminated in a scathing independent report last week, a new contractor will now install new lifts at Woolwich and improve the reliability of the Greenwich ones.
Other work includes new roofs for the rotundas, installation of enhanced CCTV and a deep clean of the tunnels themselves.
On October 21, the newly-formed friends' group met the council.
A spokesman said: "The group welcomes the new tunnel refurbishment schedule, and approves of the planned scope of the work to be carried out between now and April 2014.
"We also look forward to further improvements in both tunnels, with the Royal Borough of Greenwich consulting widely among all user groups.".
Tomorrow, people from both sides of the Thames will gather in Woolwich to mark the tunnel's 101st birthday. Visit fogwoft.com for details.
