UPDATE: Network Rail apologises as commuter chaos caused by London Bridge to New Cross engineering works set to last until tomorrow
THE HURT continues for commuters as Southeastern services continue to be held up by engineering work, with Network Rail saying lines will not all reopen until tomorrow morning.
Over-running engineering work has led to disruption between Lewisham and Cannon Street and between Charlton and London Charing Cross due to over-running engineering works between New Cross and London Bridge.
Some services that run to and from London Bridge have be diverted to start and terminate at Victoria or Blackfriars, with journey times extended by at least 20 minutes.
Tickets are being accepted on the Underground and DLR.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We apologise to passengers for Monday and Tuesday’s delays caused by overrunning engineering works.
"Despite a detailed timetable of work to hand back on time on Monday, a mechanical failure and unforeseen challenges to complete the maintenance meant this wasn’t possible.
"To complete the track renewal, further work was planned for Monday and Tuesday night and we are working to reopen all lines for Wednesday’s services.
"We will assess what lessons can be learnt from this incident to help us improve our work in the future and again apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused.”
A spokesman for Southeastern said: "We’ve written to Network Rail in the strongest possible terms to express our frustration and dissatisfaction about the disruption on behalf of our passengers.
"To their credit they’ve responded very quickly by launching an urgent review, which we’ll be taking part in. They have also decided to postpone some similar works until they have got to the bottom of the issues that caused these problems. We welcome this.
“We both acknowledge that yesterday and today’s disruption is not acceptable and we’re sorry to those passengers affected. On behalf of our passengers we will continue to press Network Rail to fix the problems as quickly as possible.
“Anyone delayed by more than 30 minutes should claim delay repay compensation from the Southeastern website.”
