Woolwich gangster jailed after peacemaking shopkeeper blasted with gun
A WOOLWICH gangster has been jailed for ten years after the shooting of an unawrmed shopkeeper.
The Old Bailey heard how rival Turkish gang members confronted each other outside a Stoke Newington supermarket on September 28 last year.
When the 35-year-old shopkeeper tried to intervene, he was blasted in the hand.
The man who shot the victim remains at large and police officers believe he fled to Turkey shortly after the incident.
Caner Karakas, aged 31, of Blenheim House, Hardinge Crescent, Woolwich, was found guilty of possession of a firearm and jailed for eight years on October 17.
He was also convicted of perverting the course of justice and jailed for a further two-and-a-half years, to run consecutively.
Detective Chief Inspector Gary Bruce of Trident said: "This attack was carried out by dangerous, violent gang members who had set out armed with a loaded firearm, determined to endanger the lives of other Londoners."
