Chart topper Gabrielle Aplin talks to Vibe before O2 gig in Greenwich supporting John Mayer
HER tender cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood was the theme tune to last year’s Christmas, thanks to John Lewis’ use of it in their ad.
And nearly a year after hitting the top of the charts, Gabrielle Aplin is still riding the crest of a wave.
On Sunday (October 20), the 21-year-old will support John Mayer at the O2 arena before heading off on a headline tour of her own, which includes a show at Shepherds Bush Empire on November 14.
Full of enthusiasm, Gabrielle told Vibe: “It’s pretty nuts, isn’t it. It’s ridiculous.
“I saw his Where the Light Is DVD five or six years ago and thinking, that’s it, I want to write songs.
“And now I get to support him, it’s an absolute dream.
“I am so excited. It is ridiculous.”
With her debut album, English Rain, having peaked at number two, Gabrielle is keen to take the album on the road.
She said: “It’s always nice to record and have creative time in the studio but when you see how it reacts with an audience, that’s great.
“You can read reviews and everything, but when you see what the audience say and see their reaction, that’s great. And you can see what different songs can do, so that’s fun.”
While her career is going crazy, Gabrielle said her day-to-day life has remained grounded.
She said: “Nothing has really changed. I’m really lucky in the sense that my life’s fairly normal.
“I get to do all the things I want and not get hounded like, say, someone in One Direction.”
For her 21st birthday on October 10, she was able to hang out with friends.
She said: “The night before my band and I had a gig in a brewery, so I was like ‘that’s done then, that’s sorted’. So we just did that.”
Gabrielle shot to fame as a Youtube sensation, and remains close to her fans on the social networks, but admits she had no idea what she was doing.
She said: “Loads of people ask me as if I had a formula and I knew what I was doing but I genuinely didn’t. I didn’t even know putting videos on Youtube was a thing.
“It was more just a place for me to document things.
“Obviously I didn’t have a recording studio so I just filmed it and put it on Youtube.
“I didn’t really know what I did until I was doing it.”
With a hugely successful year behind her, Gabrielle is understandably satisfied.
She said: “I feel like I have done everything I want this year, I’ve been incredibly lucky.
“I think I need to finish the tour and soak it all up over Christmas and reflect and then head into next year.
“Maybe we’ll do some more touring and maybe start on America next year.”
