Beckenham toddler chokes to death with mother a few feet away
A 23-MONTH-OLD boy from Beckenham died after choking on a piece of bread at home with his mother just a few feet away, an inquest heard yesterday (October 10).
Yusuf Bora died on March 8 as his mother, who could speak little English, ran screaming to her neighbours.
Coroner Lorna Tagliavini told Southwark Coroner's Court: "He was eating a piece of bread in the living room and when his mother returned from the bathroom a few minutes later Yusuf was unresponsive on the floor.
"Yusuf's mother ran onto her balcony where a neighbour heard her screaming about her son."
The neighbour reported that Yusuf was unresponsive and not moving.
Carl Baxter, a paramedic with London Ambulance Service, attended the scene after a call was received at around 1pm.
When he reached the property he heard shouting from a window.
He went into the living room where he saw Yusuf's mother, four-year-old brother and father who was trying to revive the child.
Mr Baxter performed chest compressions on the child with his colleagues but the boy could not be revived.
Yusuf was rushed to hospital where doctors tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.
Dr Manju Argawal, a consultant at University Hospital Lewisham, pronounced the child dead at 2.50pm.
He told the court: "A decision was made by the whole team involved that continuing treatment was futile.
"The boy had choked on some bread."
The post-mortem examination report confirmed the cause of death was an airway blocked by a foreign body.
Ms Tagliavini said: "I have no hesitation in recording from the facts that this very sad incident can only be accidental death and that is my conclusion."
