Lee Slimming World finalist lost weight after mum lost legs to diabetes
A LEE weight loss ‘Woman of the Year’ finalist was prompted to slim down after her diabetes-suffering mum lost her legs to the disease.
Fiona Parker says she feels like a "new woman" after dropping seven stone under a year-long healthy eating and exercise regime at Downham’s Slimming World.
The 47-year-old, who lives off Burnt Ash Hill, was 20 stone when she took the challenge following the death of her mum who suffered from Type 2 diabetes.
The mother-of-one spoke of her grief at being reunited with her birth mother just two years before she passed away after having her legs amputated.
Ms Parker told News Shopper: “I just didn’t want to suffer like my mum.
"It wasn’t to look fantastic in clothes, it was to stay alive."
The Slimming World's Woman of the Year for the south-east finalist battled with her size following the birth of her now 23-year-old daughter and says the support of the Downham-based group was vital in shedding the pounds.
She stressed the dangers of undiagnosed diabetes after her football-playing husband Christopher Parker, then 49, was found to have the condition last year and nearly went into a coma.
Ms Parker, who works as a nanny, said: "That was another shocker.
"You don’t have to be clinically obese, sometimes it is to do with lifestyle."
Despite working an 11-hour day, she now enjoys going to the gym, walking around three miles every day - and being carried over the threshold of her house by her hubby.
She said: "I feel like a new woman. I feel much healthier and a lot happier.
"When I got married I was probably still overweight and my husband wanted to carry my over the threshold but I didn’t want him to hurt his back, but now I can do that.
"Things like that are lovely."
