Greenwich Theatre director shortlisted as theatre manager of the year
GREENWICH Theatre director James Haddrell has been shortlisted as theatre manager of the year from a field of 300 people across the UK.
He is one of three contenders for the gong, part of the UK Theatre Awards being held in London on October 20.
Mr Haddrell, who has worked at the theatre for 12 years, said: "I’m absolutely delighted to be on the shortlist but this really is about the fantastic team effort at the theatre.
"Everything we do is done as a team and so is everything we achieve."
Mr Haddrell started off as the theatre's marketing manager, before becoming director in 2007. He also created the annual Greenwich Children's Theatre Festival, which presents more than 60 performances at venues and open spaces around the borough.
Greenwich Theatre productions were seen by 66,000 people in 2012/13, with that projected to rise to 80,000 in 2013/14.
The director said: "The chair of our board put my name forward this year to focus on our achievements over the last 12 months, particularly our support for young theatre makers, often giving them their first chance in the industry.
"We currently support 20 young companies producing work in collaboration with us. The vast majority are in London, a third in south London and two companies were formed in Greenwich. One of them, Sell A Door, had their West End premiere last year with Seussical the Musical.
"As we’ve developed as a team over the last six years we’ve become very aware of our obligation to young talent and to local people, including the various schools productions we welcome to the theatre."
