Beckenham man in court accused of threatening Elmers End Tesco shoppers with machete
A 35-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court accused of threatening Tesco shoppers and staff in Elmers End with a machete.
Tony Steel, of Arrol Road in Beckenham, was arrested in Goddard Road following the incident at the Croydon Road superstore at 3.32am on Friday.
He is accused of fleeing the store and crashing into several parked cars in the car park, as the police helicopter followed his every move from the sky.
Steel has since been charged with possessing an offensive weapon, affray, shoplifting and dangerous driving.
He also faces charges of driving without insurance, driving whilst disqualified, refusing a breath test and assaulting a police detention officer.
Following an appearance at Bromley Magistrates Court on Saturday, Steel was bailed to attend Croydon Crown Court on October 11.
A 29-year-old woman from Beckenham who was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting has been bailed until October 24.
