Lewisham's Matt Goss talks returning to London, hugging fans, Bros and Lewisham Hospital
FEW pop stars can claim to be a veteran at 44 but Matt Goss is unusual for many reasons.
The Lewisham-born smoothie and former Bros member has taken Las Vegas by storm with his Ratpack style residencies and is coming to London later this week with a new album and four performances at Cafe de Paris – but still finds time to wax lyrical about fruit and veg markets in south east London.
One of the most successful bands of the 1980s - which also included twin brother Luke and friend Craig Logan – Bros inspired mass hysteria in fans and Matt played out to a packed Wembley Stadium aged only 17.
The singer speaks to Vibe (from Las Vegas, where it is 1am) about tattoos, video games and his love for Lewisham Hospital.
Matt says: “I love south east London. Most of my memories are from Camberwell, people should buy their fruit and veg from the market there, it’s delicious.
“I tweeted a lot about the proposed changes to Lewisham Hospital – where I was born - I think it’s disgusting. We need our health services more than ever.
“My parents didn’t know they were having twins and my dad said to the nurse when I was being born, maybe there’s another one jokingly and she gave him a stone-cold stare, they checked and found another faint heartbeat.”
Unlike some former boyband members, Matt is happy to remain associated with the group which made his name.
He explains: “I never regretted Bros. Sometimes we’d resent the Boy band label because that represents I associate that more with boys being auditioned and standing on a stage doing harmonies.
“I talk to my brother (former band mate Luke Goss) a lot – at least once a week. We play video games with each other.”
Matt is clearly excited about returning to London and adds: “I’m a real hugger, if you ever see me just come up and give me one.”
Matt’s album Life You Imagine (Decca) is out October 7. He will have a mini-residency at Cafe de Paris, off Leicester Square – with gigs on October 3, 7, 8, 9. Tickets at ticketmaster.co.uk.
