CAMPAIGNERS against a new road tunnel at the Greenwich peninsula are holding a public meeting where they will claim the area already breaks European pollution limits.
The No Silvertown Tunnel campaign says its own research into air pollution over the summer at the Blackwall Tunnel Southern Approach and Rochester Way Relief Road showed high pollution levels in a number of areas.
And they say plans to build a tunnel connecting the peninsula to Silvertown - backed by the Mayor of London and Greenwich Council - would create even more pollution in Greenwich, Charlton, Blackheath, Kidbrooke and Eltham.
Campaigner Chris Taylor said: "Encouraging more vehicles to use these roads is madness - and will only make matters worse in the long run. We want to start a full and open debate about this issue, one which neither the mayor nor Greenwich Council want to have."
A public meeting will be held on October 16 with speakers including transport consultant John Elliott, the Campaign for Better Transport’s Sian Berry, King’s College London air quality expert Dr Ian Mudway and Clean Air London’s Simon Birkett. Greenwich Council have also been invited.
It takes place at the Forum, Trafalgar Road, at 7pm.
