Lewisham Hospital praise from Royal College of Physicians bags TV coverage
PRAISE by the Royal College of Physicians for Lewisham Hospital's treatment of elderly patients saw it featured on Channel 4 and ITV's Daybreak.
The service helps elderly patients return home from hospital sooner and has been highlighted as an example of best practice by the College.
It is estimated the scheme reduces the need for hospital admissions for up to 50 patients every month.
Care of the elderly consultant Dr Elizabeth Aitken said: "In our emergency department, we do early comprehensive assessments of older patients who may not need a lengthy hospital stay.
"This involves therapists, social workers, specialist nurses and consultants in elderly medicine. This ensures we can provide more timely support to help them in their own homes.
"For instance, if someone has had a fall, they would have a consultant review to ensure there is no serious underlying cause. We can then very quickly install equipment, like grab rails, in their homes to help them cope.
"We could arrange for home visits from healthcare and/or social care professionals or other agencies, including from local carers. This means people don’t have to stay in hospital unnecessarily, when they can enjoy a better quality of life at home."
