Not fazed by the fuss over fracking: Editor's Eye comment
FRACK me, or to be more accurate, frack my village.
I honestly don’t know if there’s oil and gas under my house, but if there is, I say let’s get it out of the ground and start tackling the energy deficit we all face. This anti-fracking nonsense has already gone on far too long and it’s time we put a stop to it. Those kicking up a fuss are all either nimbys or “professional” activists, simply looking to cause a ruck, whatever the bandwagon.
Compared to the massive benefits we all stand to gain, the level of local disruption and possible damage to the environment is so negligible it is not worth worrying about.
I seriously doubt fracking will cause the type of earthquakes so-called protestors are claiming, but don’t forget we already get hundreds of earthquakes every year. Scientists currently study seismic activity in minute detail so we would soon know if the number of quakes, and more importantly, the magnitude was increasing at a concerning rate.
We’ve been blasting at quarries for generations and that doesn’t seem to have caused any major problems. My local quarry sounds a special siren as a warning, presumably to allow workers to get clear, but it also informs residents that the ground is about to shake a little.
Having visited countries that have real earthquakes and experienced at first hand minor versions of the phenomenon I can of course understand that major quakes must be absolutely terrifying and highly destructive.
However, the worst one we have had in this country in the past 10 years only measured 4.8 on the Richter Scale and no one was injured.
To be fair there was some damage, but with the epicentre being Dudley the jury is still out as to whether an earthquake in this particularly part of the West Midlands is a good thing or not.
