But Helen Chilver, who was watching the drama unfold from her flat on the other side of the street, says she does not think it picked up a scent.

The 86-year-old said: “I hadn’t been in bed very long before I saw the flashing light coming into my bedroom from across the road and I saw there was trouble there.

“I saw a police dog going round the place and sniffing everywhere and it seemed he did not get a scent.

“The dog went right up to the corner off the road and back again.

“I don’t know if the incident was to do with the bar or if the man was just a stranger.”

And Ron Parkin, also of Masons Hill, said: “I saw the blue lights going at about 1.30am.

“The police said there was a fight and one person was in hospital.

“I cannot sleep without a window open and so I get the constant noise.

“It is absolutely ridiculous.”

The victim was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
