TRAVELLERS who set up camp in a Bexley Village car park have been forced out.
Around six caravans arrived in Thanet Road car park behind Freemantle Hall and the King’s Head pub at around 5pm on September 4.
Malcolm Knight was heading for a drink at the pub when he noticed the travellers at about 7.45pm.
The 69-year-old, of Coptefield Drive, Belvedere, told News Shopper: “I took one photograph from the entrance and found myself immediately surrounded by a number of people threatening violence.
“They got very close, within a foot, and started shouting at me.
“As I left the car park I met a woman who said she tried to park and was told in her no uncertain terms to get out.
“It was a bit scary.”
Mr Knight was left shaking by the ordeal and reported the travellers to the police.
A man, who wished not be named, said: "Typical gypsy encampment, washing line out and kids running around and jumping over cars. And their mates came down in the evening."
At noon the following day police served an eviction notice under s61 of the Criminal Justice Public Order Act on behalf of Bexley Council which runs the car park.
An eyewitness from Belvedere, who did not wish to be named, added: "They were not ramshackle caravans, they were very nice looking. I think they were Elvis caravans.
"There was lots of washing up, mostly children's, and everything was wet."
