Disabled Orpington man learns sailing skills at Chipstead Lake with Wealden Sailability scheme
A DISABLED man has set sail on a lifelong voyage after learning seafaring skills at a sailing centre.
Nick Kingsley, of Ampleforth Close, Orpington, has been going to Chipstead Lake near Sevenoaks for six weeks and can now handle a boat on his own.
The 39-year-old first went with his carer after staff at the Astley day care centre in Bromley Common told them about the Wealden Sailability scheme, which provides sailing opportunities for disabled people.
His carer Roy Thatcher said: “Without a doubt he has become more confident since he started sailing.
“Nick rarely gets excited about too much but he gets excited about this and wants to take it up as a full time hobby.”
Nick has Pelizaeus–Merzbacher disease, a rare and progressive condition which affects the central nervous system.
