Lee Rigby mum's heartbreak over Woolwich murder
THE mother of murdered soldier Lee Rigby has described the harrowing moment she knew her son had died in Woolwich.
The 25-year-old father-of-one was hacked to death in the street outside Woolwich Barracks in May.
Mum Lyn Rigby told ITV’s This Morning she was only officially told the dreadful news at 2am the following morning when police knocked at her door.
She said: “The door actually went and I knew who was at the door. “Two o'clock in the morning, you don't get visitors at that time.
“I opened the door and my world just crashed.”
Ms Rigby went on to say she had feared the soldier was her son as he always used to phone to reassure her if anybody from the military had been hurt.
Appearing with Lee’s stepdad Ian Rigby, the couple thanked the public for the letters and emails of support received from across the globe.
She said: “It’s given me the strength to get through, knowing the support we have had. “It’s given me the strength to get up in the morning.”
But she added that facing the trial for two suspects accused of his murder could set her back again.
Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, are due to stand trial for the soldier’s murder at the Old Bailey in November.
