Blackheath man who masturbated in Glades shopping centre toilets slapped with £535 fine
A BLACKHEATH man who masturbated in the public toilets of a Bromley shopping centre has been fined £535.
John Douthwaite, of Hurren Close, was standing at the urinal in The Glades shopping centre men's toilets on May 18.
Mark Simpson, an off-duty police officer, entered to use the urinal, and spotted him rubbing his penis.
During his trial at Bexley Magistrates' Court, Douthwaite claimed his behaviour was due to a prostate problem.
The 75-year-old said: "One has to encourage one’s penis and I would say, in respect to the officer, this is what he saw."
However Detective Constable Simpson said: "He was masturbating.
"He was still looking both ways and appeared to engage the other males in eye contact and it appeared to be other males were avoiding using the urinals."
CCTV footage showed the Douthwaite was in the toilets for a total of 16 minutes.
Previous sex offence
This is not the first time Douthwaite has been in front of the courts for a sex offence.
At Southwark Crown Court on April 24, 2008, he was jailed for six months, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to sexual assault of a child under 13.
In August 2007, while on a weekend break at the Hilton London Metropole in Paddington with his wife, who died last December, he spotted a 10-year-old girl walking through the hotel corridors.
He grabbed the girl by the shoulders, before telling her: "You're beautiful" and trying to kiss her.
