Dartford and Gravesend outdoor fire callouts triple this summer
CALLOUTS for outdoor fires in Dartford and Gravesend have almost tripled compared to the same period last year.
That’s according to Kent Fire and Rescue Service which was called to 93 outdoor, rubbish or grassland fires in the area between July 1 and August 13 compared to the same six weeks in 2012.
Fires include unattended bonfires which have spread to trees and undergrowth, fires in rubbish bins, youths setting fires to grassland and blazes sparked by carelessly discarded cigarettes.
Dartford crew manager Richard Cromarty said: "We’ve had a spell of warm weather, which will hopefully continue throughout the summer holidays so people can enjoy being outside.
"But we all need to remember grass and woodland gets extremely dry in these conditions and it only takes a careless act of not stubbing out a cigarette properly to spark a fire."
