A BREAST cancer survivor from Sydenham has got stuck in with building work on a new state-of-the-art cancer centre in the hospital where she was treated.
Diana Crawshaw, of Ormanton road, carried out the ‘breaking the ground’ ceremony at Guy’s Hospital in London Bridge with Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Simon Hughes.
The pair celebrated the start of a £160m centre for patients like Mrs Crawshaw.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago and is now chairman of the patient’s reference group at Guy’s.
She said: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2008 and had surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy at Guy’s.
“The main reason I chose this hospital was because the transport links into London Bridge station meant it was convenient but as my treatment progressed I realised I was very lucky to be there because I had superb care.
“Although my surgeon confirmed recently that my five years of treatment had been successful, I will continue to be involved in clinical trials.
“I have benefited from the results of previous research into new treatments and I want to help other people in my position.”
