Police chase: Northfleet man admits leading pursuit from Abbey Wood to Bexley Village via Bexleyheath
A WELDER from Northfleet has admitted to leading a late-night police chase through Bexley.
Barry Banfield, of Beresford Road, Northfleet, stole a van in Abbey Wood before leading a five-mile police pursuit at shortly after 10pm on August 13.
The 39-year-old failed to stop for police while turning the stolen white Ford transit into Dhalia Road from Bracondale Road.
He sped off towards Bexleyheath before abandoning the vehicle in Vicarage Road in Bexley.
Banfield was immediately caught by officers and arrested in the country lane.
The Met Police’s helicopter was called to help with the incident which sparked widespread interest online.
Jamie Levett tweeted: "What's going on around here then...police going absolutely mental, towards Bexleyheath. 5 cars now a helicopter!"
Appearing via video link at Bromley Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Aug 15), Banfield pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated taking of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance and driving whilst disqualified.
He was released on conditional bail and ordered to stay at home in Beresford Road between 6am to 9pm until he returns to court to be sentenced on September 5.
