Bexleyheath Sports Club celebrates receiving £38,000 Olympic legacy funding
OLYMPIC legacy funding worth £38,000 has been awarded to Bexleyheath Sports Club in Welling to upgrade the car park.
Resurfacing, marked parking spaces and new drainage are among the improvements to be made at the club in Park View Road where more than 400 members enjoy cricket, tennis, hockey and road running.
Work is expected to begin as soon as the end of next month now the cash has been secured.
Cricket chairman and memnership and fundraising secretary Mick Parnham told News Shopper: "It is going to improve the club no end, it will attract more members.
"It will get more people playing sport in the local area and make our club stronger and put us on the map a bit more."
The 53-year-old added: "It took me about 30 hours to put the application together.
"When I got the phone call saying we had got it I was absolutely gobsmacked."
The grant has been secured from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund, part of the National Lottery programme, which helps communities improve existing sports clubs or transform venues into new sporting facilities.
Club chairman Tony Barker said: "We're delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our car parking facilities to match the quality of our sports coaches and managers.
"It is the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club for the 2012 Olympics’ legacy."
MP for Bexleyheath and Crayford David Evennett added: "I am pleased that Bexleyheath Sports Club will receive this funding and I congratulate them.
"I know that they provide important facilities and a variety of activities.
"It is vital that clubs like this continue to benefit from the Olympic legacy."
