TRIBUTES have been paid to a great-grandmother described as the “Queen of Bellingham” who died aged 72.

A funeral was held for Madge Murphy at St Dunstan’s Church, Bellingham Green, on Saturday (August 3) after she passed away on July 21.

The grandmother-of-22, known locally as Nanny Marge, has been praised for her active role in the community where she served as play leader of Lewisham Play Scheme for more than 20 years.

Neighbours say the great-grandmother-of-23 acted as an extended grandmother in Bellingham and often gave her time to help with children’s activities at festivals and carnivals.

Neighbour Margaret Miller said: “She was truly the Queen of Bellingham, she put so much time, effort and love into the children of Bellingham.

“This lady truly deserves a good write-up on what she done for this community she went far beyond her job description to help children and their families.”

Jeff Miller, 53, added: “She was loving and caring and kept the youngsters interested.

“She even helped the naughty ones, she treated everyone the same.”
