SWARMS of flying ants have been spotted today (July 26) in Petts Wood enjoying their once-a-year mating ritual.

The insects were seen in Queensway but are thought to be out in force all over the country on their special day.

It is not fully understood how the ants know which day is ideal for them to mate but scientists do know the weather is important - the bugs pick a day sensing temperature, humidity and length of day.

Warm and humid conditions are perfect so it is currently perfect breeding time for the little critters.

The Society of Biology reported 6,000 sightings last year and wants people to get in touch if they have seen the ants this year.
