1963: The Foreign Office is told Kim Philby, the former Foreign Office colleague of Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, was the ‘Third Man’.
He who told his two friends the security office were on their trail before both fled to the Soviet Union.
Philby had been cleared by Foreign Secretary Harold Macmillan. It was thought Philby was also in Moscow.
1943: The film actor and director Leslie Howard was missing, believed dead, after the aircraft on which he was a passenger was shot down in the Bay of Biscay. He starred in Gone With the Wind, The First of the Few and Pygmalion.
1913: Thousands of suffragettes, many from north Kent and London, said farewell to the woman they regard as their matryred heroine, Emily Davison. Emily died from her injuries when she fell under the King’s horse at the Epsom derby.
