GREENWICH police say they have received reports of arson after a spate of grass fires on Plumstead Common.

There were five minor fires on the common over the weekend including a tree alight at midnight on July 21, and flames during merrymaking at festival Plumstead Live.

There are reports that at least one fire was deliberately started by a small group of young people.

It comes after fire crews were called to three different fires on Plumstead Common in just over an hour on July 16.

A Greenwich Police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that the London fire Brigade have notified us of a number of fires across Plumstead Common.

“We have received allegations that at least one of three fires has been deliberately started by a small group of young people.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Kevin Hebdon, of Plumstead Safer Neighbourhood policing team, on 020 8721 2639.
