THICK black smoke was seen billowing from three half-built houses in a multi-million pound development which caught fire in Dartford this afternoon.

Five fire engines were called to tackle the blaze which started at around 12.30pm in Halcrow Avenue.

It is believed the three timber-framed terraced homes affected are part of a brand new development called Waterside at The Bridge, close to the Dartford Crossing.

Jamie Dell, 24, who works in the office block opposite the blaze, told News Shopper: “The middle one went up first and it has spread to the other two.

"It’s quite mad.

“Some of the houses are occupied but they’re building others which are about 60 per cent complete.”

Sales representative Gwen Janman spotted the blaze as she headed towards the A2 on her way to a call in Gillingham at around 1pm.

The Brampton Road, Bexleyheath, resident told News Shopper: "If you have got that plot you are unlucky as you won't be moving in this weekend.

"It would be a demolition job now as both the roofs have fallen in.

"When you are coming on the dual carriageway you just think it might be coming all over your side of the road."
