A DEPTFORD woman who gave a baby a bottle containing bleach in an Eltham McDonald's had approached other mothers that day, police say.

CCTV footage had shown Elaine Joyner giving the bottle to the 11-month-old boy before leaving the High Street restaurant on September 13.

The child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, drank some of the liquid before vomiting it back up again.

His mum said in a statement: "As far as I was concerned my baby had been poisoned."

Police enquiries confirmed  Joyner had attempted to engage another group of women, who had children in pushchairs, in conversation earlier in the day in Eltham.

However, she had been unable to pass the bottle she was carrying to any of the children.

Last month, a jury took just 20 minutes to decide that the 53-year-old, of Vaughan Williams Close, had committed the act.

Yesterday (July 8), she was given a section 41 hospital order, meaning she must remain at Bethlem Royal Hospital until she is no longer deemed a risk to the public.

Detective Inspector Jonathan Mearns, from Greenwich police, said: "It is impossible to comprehend the actions of Elaine Joyner - only she will know why she deliberately gave a bottle containing bleach to a young child, knowing full well that the child would almost certainly drink from that bottle.

“Thankfully, the child involved did not suffer any lasting damage but the potential harm Joyner’s actions could have caused are chillingly clear to see."
