LABOUR'S selection of a Unite official to contest the safe Lewisham Deptford seat at the next election has been referred to the Met Police by the Tories.

The move follows allegations of irregularities in a candidate selection race in Falkirk, which have called into question's Labour's relationship with the unions.

Brockley's Councillor Vicky Foxcroft was selected as the party's parliamentary candidate for Lewisham Deptford from an all-woman shortlist in May.

But, in a letter to Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, Tory vice-chairman Bob Neill - MP for Bromley and Chislehurst - urged an investigation into that process, along with Ilford North, saying both were of "particular concern".

He wrote: "A London Labour activist Mandy Richards has alleged that Unite are "bankrolling" a number of "orchestrated" campaigns, and she singles out Lewisham Deptford for special attention.

"Again, given that this constituency appears on Unite’s secret list I am deeply concerned that Falkirk-style abuses may also have taken place."
