BROMLEY police have launched an operation targeting pickpockets, a problem that has historically plagued the borough’s town centres and shopping centres during the summer.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Furphy, of Bromley police, said: "Pickpockets and thieves go where people gather, where their attention can be distracted and where purses, wallets and phones are left on easy view, and this tends to be the case when people are out shopping and socialising during the summer months.

"Commercial premises provide the richest pickings, with town centre shopping centre and supermarkets being popular venues.

"Cafés and pubs are also places where people are more careless with their valuables.

"I would urge you to take simple crime prevention measures to keep your handbag, purse, money and bank cards safe.

"Please remember to keep your wallet or purse out of sight, avoid carrying large amounts of cash and be careful not to let anyone see what’s in your purse or wallet as you pay for goods.

"Make sure you never keep PIN numbers with bank cards and be vigilant and aware of who is around, particularly when withdrawing money from a cash machine.

"Make sure no one is looking over your shoulder and shield your PIN.

"When withdrawing money from a cash machine, don’t let anyone see how much you’ve withdrawn.

"Put money immediately in a purse or wallet and secure it in a bag before moving away from the machine.

"Never leave your purse or bag unattended on a trolley, pushchair or wheelchair as it can be stolen in a matter of seconds."
