ONE of the cars involved in a three-vehicle crash in New Eltham this morning was being chased by police, it is believed.

Emergency services were called to the Fiveways junction on the A20 Sidcup Road near Green Lane shortly after 8am.

Sidcup Road resident Molly Bray told News Shopper how one of the three cars involved hit the lamppost outside her house, causing the lamp to fall on her black Skoda Fabia, smashing the back windscreen.

The 23-year-old said: “I think the first car was being chased by the police.

“They swerved into the railings in the middle of the road which caused the other car behind it to swerve in the same way.

“The car spun then swerved into the lamppost which then fell over, hitting the wall and then the actual lamp part fell on to my car.”

Miss Bray said she heard the crash outside her home but did not see it.

Three cars were involved in the smash, a dark blue Ford Focus, a black Vauxhall Astra and another black Skoda.

She added: “I looked out as police were getting out of their cars as they were on the scene already.

“The woman who crashed into the lamppost looked quite shocked - I went down to check that she was alright.

“Police had driven off again in pursuit of the first car as I think the people got out and ran.”

It is not believed anyone was badly injured following the smash.

The Met Police helicopter was scrambled at around 9am to the New Eltham area, where it was “searching for suspects after a foot chase by officers.”

The road was initially blocked just before Fiveways at 8.30am but a full closure of the road was put in place at Frognal Corner shortly before 9.30am.

There were long delays in the area throughout the morning before the road re-opened shortly after midday.
