THE inquest into the death of a 17-year-old Business Academy Bexley student has been adjourned.

Sam Boon collapsed and died on the second day of a World Challenge trek in Morocco on July 17 last year.

The five-day inquest into his death was due to begin this morning at Bromley Civic Centre but the hearing was adjourned until later this year due to lack of available experts.

Mr Boon was one of 11 students from the school, in Yarnton Way, to take part in the trip, which included a six-day trek to Amezmiz in the High Atlas foothills followed by seven days completing a project in a rural community.

Sam’s father Ken Boon said: "Sam collapsed on the second day of the trek and had to wait for two hours by the roadside in extreme heat for evacuation, which came in the form of a minibus rather than an ambulance.

"Whilst the expedition leader and the school staff did everything they could on the ground to try to save him, they, along with our son, were badly let down and we hope the inquest will answer our questions as to why this happened."

South London Coroner Selena Lynch said the cause of death “cannot be ascertained”, adding “there’s a list of possibilities”.

She apologised to the Boon family and the witnesses who were due to give evidence for the delay this morning.

Addressing the counsel, she added: "I have to make sure that I don’t tread on your toes and make outrageous demands because these sorts of trips are vital for young people and it is important to make them safe, not to stop them all together."

A new date is yet to be set but it is likely to be in the end of November or the start of December.
