FIREFIGHTERS are treating a huge blaze in Longfield as suspicious.
Crews were called to the Old Wood Yard in Northdown Road at 6.48pm yesterday evening to reports of a fire in a derelict outer building.
Two fire engines from Dartford station found an area of approximately 30 square foot on fire, which they tackled with hose reels.
Additional crews from Thames-side station were later called to deliver extra water supplies.
Police officers were also called to the scene a 7.03pm, initially to control traffic.
Northdown Road was eventually closed from the junction with Highcross Road to the Green Street Green side because thick black smoke was drifting across the carriageway.
A team from UK Power Networks were called by the fire brigade at 7.11pm as there were concerns the fire could damage the overhead electricity line.
A spokeswoman said: “Our engineers attended and established that our equipment had not been damaged by the fire.”
Firefighters left the scene at 7.50pm and the road re-opened at 8.20pm.
Police are investigating the fire, which is being treated as suspicious, and enquiries continue.
