QUEEN Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich has been revealed as one of the busiest A&Es in London receiving almost 100 ambulance visits each day.

Figures released this week show an average of 96 people a day are brought in by ambulance, and more than 35,000 each year.

If plans to downgrade Lewisham Hospital’s A&E are finalised, Queen Elizabeth could be inundated with thousands more ambulance visits.

Lewisham Hospital currently receives 65 each day and more than 23,000 a year.

The data from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) for the period of June 2012 to May 2013 shows the hospital comes below Queens in Romford, St Thomas’ in Westminster and Northwick Park in Harrow as the fourth busiest A&E department in the capital.

The Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough receives 69 ambulances a day and around 25, 000 visits each year.

Assistant director of operations at LAS Paul Gates said: “Demand for our service continues to rise and we are attending 12.2 per cent more patients with life-threatening illnesses and injuries than last year.

“But not everyone who calls 999 will get an ambulance.

“People with less serious illnesses and injuries may be given clinical advice over the phone and, although we attend just under 1.1m incidents every year we only take 747,000 patients to A&E.”
