NEWS Shopper can exclusively reveal pictures of the soon-to-be revamped Gravesend train station.

These images give commuters a taste of the multi-million pound proposals designed to help the town cope with the three million passengers who pass through the barriers every year.

The new-look £19m facility will see the station accommodate longer 12-carriage trains thanks to a new platform, while passengers will also benefit from a new footbridge and lifts providing step-free access to all platforms.

The station will close from December 22 until January 6 next year enabling contractors Spencer Rail to complete track layout changes and main station construction work.

How the revamped platform at Gravesend station will look.

But after viewing the blueprints last week, Gravesham MP Adam Holloway is far from convinced.

He told News Shopper: "They have obviously got the message about keeping disruption to a minimum but the station is still going to be shut from just before Christmas until early January.

"It is costing a gigantic amount of money.

"The thing that’s worrying me is whether or not the new construction is going to be in keeping with our traditional Victorian station.

Adam Holloway gets the lowdown with Simon Davies from Network Rail.

"It is still in my view rather too modern but it is a matter of taste.

"I am conservative with a small ‘c’ and I would like the design to be more traditional."

Spencer Rail spokesman Julie Worman said: "We are really pleased Mr Holloway came along so we could demonstrate just what the project entails.

"We have worked closely with Network Rail on many projects in the south-east and this is another example of a project where we know we are delivering real benefits to passengers."
